Daily Intelligence Briefing — Air OSINT Monitor

Date: 16 September 2026

Executive Summary

The dominant air power event of the past 24 hours is the confirmed shootdown of a Royal Saudi Air Force F-15SA by Houthi air defenses over Yemen's Marib Governorate, with wreckage footage and onboard SAM camera video circulating widely. Concurrently, a U.S. tanker drawdown from Europe is underway, with 23 fewer tankers at forward bases compared to 11 September, suggesting a partial repositioning of supporting forces outside CENTCOM. A KC-46A declared an in-flight emergency off the New Jersey coast, while 12 F-15Es from the 366th Fighter Wing completed their return from CENTCOM to RAF Lakenheath via Coronet East 080. A Congressional Budget Office report has surfaced confirming combat losses of two KC-135s and one F-35A — the latter appearing to be the first acknowledged combat loss of an F-35.

Key Events

Analysis

Patterns & Trends:

The Saudi F-15SA shootdown marks a significant capability demonstration by Houthi air defenses, which have now successfully engaged a modern fourth-generation fighter — a reminder that non-state actors can pose credible threats to advanced air assets. The event follows the earlier loss of a Saudi F-15SA reportedly shot down over Yemen, and comes amid intensifying Saudi-Houthi reciprocal strikes.

The US tanker drawdown from Europe (23 fewer aircraft) is notable. While CENTCOM tanker levels remain steady, the reduction at European forward bases suggests either a post-Iran-war repositioning or redirection of assets to other theaters. This bears watching for future Coronet movements.

The CBO report surfacing of F-35A and second KC-135 combat losses — neither fully acknowledged by DoD — indicates the true cost of the Iran war on US air assets may be higher than publicly stated. Combined with the imagery of the severed E-3 AWACS tail at Prince Sultan AB and reports of Russian satellite-enabled targeting, this paints a picture of increasingly effective Iranian strike capabilities against fixed airbases.

P-8 Poseidon activity remains elevated across multiple theaters (UK Lossiemouth, Ireland, South Korea, US East Coast), suggesting sustained maritime ISR pressure. The confirmed equipping of VPU-2's P-8As with Starshield terminals indicates upgraded ISR connectivity.

NATO AWACS rotations to Poland and Iceland continue, consistent with sustained NATO ISR posture along the alliance's eastern and northern flanks.

What to Watch: - Saudi response to F-15 loss — potential retaliatory airstrikes or changed ROE over Yemen - Further tanker drawdown movements from Europe - Additional Coronet East movements as CENTCOM-based fighters rotate home - Confirmation or denial of F-35A combat loss - Russian satellite overflight patterns over US/coalition bases in the region - E-7A Wedgetail operational testing progression at RAF Lossiemouth - JASDF RQ-4B crash investigation and impact on Japanese ISR coverage

US Tanker Fleet Update

@DefenceGeek · 2026-09-16T18:36

US Tanker Fleet Update 16/SEP/2026 #IranWar. As I've noted over the last few days, there has been a significant number of tankers depart Europe heading back to the US mainland, mostly aircraft that only arrived in July or August. While the number in CENTCOM remains steady, this means the "orange/green" bases have seen a significant reduction in overall numbers - 23 less aircraft than on my last update on 11th September. This seems to suggest a partial draw-down of supporting forces outside CENTCOM, or a re-direction of assets for other needs. → tweet link

Combat Losses & Air Base Damage

@sentdefender · 2026-09-15T23:21

A new Congressional Budget Office report on the costs of Operation Epic Fury was released today, and it contains a notable table detailing U.S. battle losses. The table lists the loss of two KC-135 Stratotankers and one F-35A. To date, the Department of War has publicly acknowledged the loss of only one KC-135, which was destroyed in a crash over western Iraq. The Department has also acknowledged that multiple KC-135s were damaged during an Iranian strike on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. The inclusion of an F-35A in the CBO's battle-loss table also appears to confirm the first combat loss of an F-35. → tweet link

Air Defense Interceptor Expenditure

@sentdefender · 2026-09-16T01:28

The U.S. fired 70+ high end air defense interceptors during Iran's latest ballistic missile attack on Jordan. The Wall Street Journal reports the U.S. fired 60–70 Patriots and more than a dozen THAAD interceptors against roughly 20 Iranian ballistic missiles. Iran used increasingly complex warheads designed to release multiple projectiles near their targets, and some missiles still struck aircraft at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base. The expenditure comes after the U.S. had already fired roughly 1,700 Patriots, 200 THAADs and 150 naval Standard Missiles by mid-July. → tweet link

@Osinttechnical · 2026-09-16T03:51

@FaytuksNetwork · 2026-09-16T03:47

U.S. forces fired 60–70 Patriot interceptors and more than a dozen THAADs to counter roughly 20 ballistic missiles last week, about what the U.S. has used in a full week at other times in the war, officials say. Iran used warheads that separate into multiple projectiles, making them harder to intercept. While no troops were killed, Iran still hit jet fighters and other aircraft at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base. → tweet link
