Iran & Middle East Intelligence Briefing
Period: April 22–23, 2026 | Operation Epic Fury
Executive Summary
Three U.S. aircraft carriers (USS Gerald R. Ford, USS George H.W. Bush, and USS Abraham Lincoln) are now simultaneously operating in the CENTCOM area of responsibility as a major U.S.-Israeli military buildup continues, with a significant USMC fighter squadron and dozens of refueling aircraft deploying to the region. Iran's parliamentary speaker Ghalibaf has been forced off the nuclear negotiation team by the IRGC, signaling internal fractures within the Iranian leadership at a critical diplomatic juncture. Trump issued an order to "shoot and kill" any vessel laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz and declared minesweeping operations were tripling, while the Pentagon warned it could take up to six months to fully clear Iranian mines. Iran's IRGC Navy seized two container ships in the Strait, and Iran has begun levying transit fees on vessels using the waterway, while 33 ships have been redirected under the U.S. blockade. Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei remains gravely wounded but mentally functional, with President Pezeshkian reportedly involved in his medical care, as Israeli Defense Minister Katz stated Israel awaits a U.S. "green light" to resume strikes aimed at "completing the elimination of the Khamenei dynasty."

Analysis
Escalation trajectory is steep. The simultaneous deployment of three carrier strike groups to CENTCOM, the tripling of minesweeping, USMC tactical aviation reinforcement, and dozens of tankers pre-positioned at Ben Gurion airport all point toward imminent offensive preparations rather than posturing. The Sunday deadline, however low the expectation of success, creates a defined decision point.
Iran's internal fracture is strategically significant. The IRGC's forced removal of Ghalibaf from the negotiating team is the clearest public signal yet that hardliners are overriding any diplomatic track. Combined with Khamenei's physical incapacitation and his delegation of authority to IRGC generals, this suggests Iran's decision-making is increasingly militarized and resistant to compromise — precisely as the U.S. sets ultimatums.
The Strait of Hormuz has become the central battleground. Iran is simultaneously seizing vessels, laying mines, and now charging tolls — asserting sovereignty over the waterway even as the U.S. blockades Iranian shipping. The 6-month mine-clearance timeline and elevated energy prices indicate this is a prolonged chokepoint crisis, not a short-term incident.
Lebanon ceasefire is fragile. With the 10-day ceasefire expiring Thursday and Hezbollah already claiming a retaliatory strike, the Lebanon front remains an active pressure point. Moving the talks to the White House with Trump personally attending raises the stakes but does not guarantee convergence.
Watch next: Whether the Sunday Iran deal deadline triggers Israeli military action or another extension; any escalation in the Strait following Trump's shoot-to-kill order; further IRGC interference in the negotiating track; and whether the Lebanon ceasefire collapses ahead of or alongside any Iran escalation.
