Executive Summary
Tensions in the Middle East have sharply escalated following a series of IRGC attacks on at least four commercial vessels—including a loaded Qatari LNG tanker—in the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in significant damage and fires. In direct response to the maritime assaults, the Trump administration revoked Iran's sanctions waiver for oil production and sales, though U.S. officials simultaneously stressed an ongoing commitment to negotiating with Iran in good faith. Regionally, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed strong opposition to the potential U.S. sale of F-35 jets to Turkey, and French President Emmanuel Macron's historic visit to Syria was disrupted by explosions near his Damascus hotel.
Key Events
- The IRGC fired missiles and drones at multiple commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, striking at least four tankers, including a laden Qatari LNG carrier, and forcing the U.S. to revoke Iran's oil sanctions waiver → link
- The U.S. revokes Iran's sanctions waiver for oil production and sales in response to the tanker attacks, while concurrently stating a commitment to ongoing diplomatic negotiations → link
- Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu publicly opposes the potential U.S. sale of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey, citing concerns over Russian S-400 systems → link
- Twin explosions rock Damascus near the hotel where French President Emmanuel Macron is staying during his historic visit; Macron remains unharmed and continues his meetings → link
- A cargo vessel reports coming under attack 30 nautical miles southwest of the Red Sea, breaking a recent lull in regional maritime assaults → link
Analysis
The IRGC's coordinated attacks on commercial shipping represent a significant escalation in the Strait of Hormuz, directly challenging international maritime norms and enforcing Iran's demand that vessels use their PGSA transit routes instead of internationally recognized lanes. The U.S. response illustrates a bifurcated strategy: punitive economic measures (revoking the oil waiver) paired with a commitment to diplomacy, suggesting an attempt to contain the crisis without triggering a wider military conflict. With Iran's new supreme leader still unseen publicly and regional proxy activity persisting from the Red Sea to Lebanon, watch for potential U.S. or allied naval responses in the Gulf, further fluctuations in global oil and shipping rates, and Iran's next strategic moves regarding the nuclear negotiations.

According to a report from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) Centre, a vessel 8nm east of Limah, Oman was struck by an unknown projectile as it traveled southbound away from the Strait of Hormuz. No casualties have been reported at this time. @MartinKelly reported earlier that the vessel, a Nakilat Shipping Qatar Limited tanker, which was loaded, reported being struck in the engine room. Based on position of the strike, it’s fair to assess that the vessel was traveling in the proposed Oman-International Maritime Organization (IMO) transit lanes and not the lanes proposed by Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA). This may have induced an Iranian strike, as Iran continues to maintain that their PGSA transit routes are the only viable option for commercial maritime traffic. → tweet link
