Daily Intelligence Briefing: Iran & Middle East Monitor
Date: July 14, 2026
Executive Summary
The United States conducted three consecutive nights of airstrikes against Iranian military targets across multiple sites including Bushehr, Chabahar, Jask, Konarak, Abu Musa Island, and Bandar Abbas, while formally reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports effective July 14 at 20:00 UTC. Iran's Revolutionary Guard retaliated by launching missile and drone attacks against U.S. military sites in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan, and struck two UAE commercial tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, killing one crew member and wounding eight. Commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has plummeted to fewer than five transits in 24 hours, and Brent crude surged above $81/barrel as markets price in escalating geopolitical risk. President Trump rescinded his proposed 20% toll on Hormuz transit, replacing it with trade agreements with Gulf states, while pressing Netanyahu to withdraw IDF forces from Syria and Lebanon.

Analysis
The situation has shifted from a tit-for-tat exchange into a sustained U.S. military campaign against Iran, with CENTCOM conducting three consecutive nights of strikes and a formal naval blockade now in effect. Iran's retaliation pattern reveals a strategy of targeting U.S. allies and infrastructure across the Gulf—Bahrain (Fifth Fleet HQ), Kuwait, Jordan, UAE commercial shipping—rather than direct strikes on U.S. assets, likely calculating that broadening the conflict across multiple Gulf states increases political pressure on Washington.
The collapse of commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is the most strategically significant development. With fewer than five transits in 24 hours versus a normal 130+, and even U.S.-protected convoys coming under attack, the "open but not normal" status effectively constitutes a partial closure of the world's most critical oil chokepoint. Oil markets are responding accordingly.
Trump's decision to rescind the 20% toll suggests domestic and allied pushback, but the blockade regime remains. The parallel pressure on Netanyahu to withdraw from Syria and Lebanon signals a U.S. desire to reduce the regional footprint and de-escalate flashpoints, even while intensifying military pressure on Tehran. Iraq's September 30 U.S. withdrawal timeline further shrinks the regional U.S. footprint.
What to watch next: Whether Iran attempts to break the U.S. naval blockade, whether the IRGC escalates attacks on additional Gulf states (particularly Saudi Arabia, given Houthi threats), whether Israel complies with U.S. pressure to withdraw from Syria/Lebanon, and the trajectory of global oil prices if Hormuz traffic remains suppressed. The War Powers clock (60 days) is now ticking.

US Strikes on Iran & Naval Blockade
@sentdefender · 2026-07-14T11:12
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the completion of its third consecutive night of strikes last night against Iranian military targets, continuing operations aimed at degrading Tehran's ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. During the approximately five-hour operation, U.S. forces struck military targets in Bushehr, Chabahar, Jask, Konarak, Abu Musa Island, and Bandar Abbas, focusing on coastal defense systems, missile and drone infrastructure, naval assets, and maritime support capabilities. The latest strikes come amid continued Iranian attacks on commercial shipping, Tehran's declaration that the Strait of Hormuz is closed, and ahead of the reinstatement of the U.S. naval blockade of Iran, which is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. ET on July 14. → tweet link

President Donald J. Trump has issued a lengthy statement on Truth Social declaring that the Strait of Hormuz is now open to all commercial shipping except vessels traveling to or from Iranian ports or carrying Iranian cargo, crediting recent U.S. military operations with restoring freedom of navigation. Trump said the U.S. will maintain a full blockade of Iran, warning that the country's leadership is leading Iran down "the path of TOTAL DESTRUCTION." He also announced he is abandoning the proposed 20% "United States reimbursement fee" floated yesterday, saying it will instead be replaced by trade and investment agreements with Gulf states. → tweet link

Strait of Hormuz, Shipping & Oil
@TheIntelFrog · 2026-07-14T17:03
Visible commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains exceptionally light. Fewer than five vessels completed the transit over the past 24 hours, with all using the Iranian traffic separation scheme. At least one U.S.-protected convoy transited with AIS transponders turned off, yet still came under attack, leaving one mariner dead and several others injured. While officials have repeatedly stated the Strait is open, open does not necessarily mean normal. Even at the peak of the ceasefire, visible traffic appeared to recover to less than 25% of pre-conflict levels, and activity has declined further amid the latest escalation. A normal 24 hour period in the Strait sees 130+ vessel transits. → tweet link

Israel, Lebanon & Syria
@sentdefender · 2026-07-14T17:46
According to Axios, citing both U.S. and Israeli officials, in a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last Thursday, U.S. President Donald J. Trump told him that the Israel Defense Force (IDF) should begin to withdraw forces from both Syria and Lebanon. Per the report, President Trump warned that the risk for escalation, particularly with the IDF's presence in Southeastern Syria, is high, with Trump telling his Israeli counterpart "They don't want you there. You should redeploy." Prime Minister Netanyahu has pushed back, saying that security zones in both countries are necessary. This comes as Israeli and Lebanese diplomats met in Rome today to discuss continued cooperation on the gradual Israeli withdrawal and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar's announcement during a visit to the Czech Republic that the IDF was preparing to withdraw from 2 pilot zones in Southern Lebanon. → tweet link
