Iran & Middle East Monitor — Daily Intelligence Briefing
Date: August 7, 2026
Executive Summary
The Iran War entered a critical new phase as Iran struck commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, Saudi Arabia braced for coordinated attacks from Iraqi militias and Iran-backed Houthis, and a new trilateral defense pact was signed between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan. The U.S. naval blockade has effectively halted Iranian crude exports, leaving Kharg Island idle since July 31, while ADNOC reported 15 of its vessels have been attacked by Iranian forces since the war began. Meanwhile, Iran and Oman are reportedly negotiating an interim deal to jointly oversee the Strait of Hormuz, including transit fees that the shipping industry has labeled a "protection racket." Israeli intelligence also underwent a shakeup after a failed plan to overthrow the Iranian regime early in the war.

-
ADNOC reported 15 vessels attacked by Iranian missiles/drones since the war began, including 3 this week, with 1 crew member killed and 20 injured. → link
-
The U.S. Treasury targeted Iran's shadow banking network for the eighth time in 2026, sanctioning currency exchange houses and shell companies used to access oil revenues. → link

Houthis announced strikes on Saudi forces in Al-Rawik, Al-Abr, and Al-Thaniah using ballistic missiles and drones, marking an escalation from maritime attacks to direct ground-target strikes. → link
Analysis
The conflict is intensifying on multiple fronts simultaneously. The maritime domain remains the most volatile: Iran's direct attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, combined with the proposed Iran-Oman toll arrangement, represent a fundamental challenge to the freedom of navigation that the U.S. blockade was designed to enforce. The fact that a Qatar-owned LNG carrier has been unable to pass the blockade line three times suggests the enforcement mechanism is creating unintended friction with non-Iranian commerce.
The depletion of Saudi Patriot interceptors to near-critical levels (400 remaining) is a strategic vulnerability that Iran and its proxies likely intend to exploit, as evidenced by the intelligence warnings of coordinated multi-direction attacks on Saudi Arabia. The Mecca Defence Agreement, while defensive in framing, signals Gulf states' growing anxiety about relying solely on U.S. security guarantees amid munitions depletion.
What to watch next: - Whether the reported coordinated attacks on Saudi Arabia materialize and from how many vectors - Progress of the Iran-Oman Hormuz interim deal and whether the U.S. or shipping industry will accept transit fees - Houthis' shift from maritime interdiction to direct ground strikes on Saudi forces — a potential widening of the conflict theater - Impact of the Mossad leadership shakeup on Israel's covert operations against Iran - Trump administration signals on potential negotiations, with the President noting Iranians "want to make a deal"

Strait of Hormuz — Maritime & Shipping
@sentdefender · 2026-08-06T19:45
Iranian state-linked media outlet Tasnim is reporting that two explosions heard near Qeshm Island were the result of Iranian forces engaging "hostile enemy targets" near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. According to social media reports, the targets were two commercial vessels transiting outbound through the U.S.-established safe route via Omani waters. → link

The Bahamas-flagged, Qatar-owned LNG carrier Al Areesh appears to be approaching the U.S. naval blockade line at the entrance to the Gulf of Oman for a third time, after twice previously reversing course. The vessel does not appear to have loaded cargo in Iran or be associated with an Iranian port, and therefore does not appear to fit the publicly understood criteria for vessels subject to the U.S. naval blockade. → link
@TheIntelFrog · 2026-08-06T21:18
There might be an interim deal coming between Oman and Iran. Under the terms, Iran will control at least inbound and possibly some outbound traffic while Oman controls the rest. The traffic separation scheme would move back to near the center of the Strait. In exchange, Iran wants sanctions relief and access to frozen assets. Following the interim deal will be negotiations on a final deal where at least voluntary fees are on the table. Someone is begging for a deal, but I don't think it's who we've been told. → link

Munitions Depletion & NATO Implications (Iran War Spillover)
@sentdefender · 2026-08-07T02:09
U.S. intelligence now assesses that Vladimir Putin could test NATO's resolve with a limited attack on a member state within the next several years. The report ties the assessment to growing concerns over U.S. munitions stockpiles — officials cited shortages of Patriot interceptors, THAAD interceptors, Stingers, PrSM, and ATACMS following years of aid to Ukraine and heavy expenditure during Operation Epic Fury against Iran. → link

U.S. intelligence assessments indicate that Putin could attempt a limited assault on a NATO member state in the next few years. The move would aim to fracture the alliance and test its response to sub-Article 5 threats, coinciding with military shortfalls driven by the Ukraine war and heavy missile usage in the Iran war. - WSJ → link
