Executive Summary

The US-Iran conflict remains the dominant force shaping Middle Eastern geopolitics, characterized by intense maritime standoffs in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea. US Central Command successfully enforced a naval blockade of Iran by disabling a commercial vessel attempting to breach the perimeter, while Houthi forces inflicted the first confirmed crew fatalities in a multi-missile attack on a cargo ship in the Bab el-Mandeb. Diplomatic prospects remain dim, with senior Iranian officials rejecting US ceasefire extensions and the US shifting toward a strategy of economic strangulation via sanctions and blockade. Meanwhile, intelligence emerged regarding a highly credible Iranian surface-to-air missile threat against President Trump in Turkey, highlighting the ongoing asymmetric risks posed by Tehran.

Key Events

Analysis

The current trajectory indicates a sustained high-intensity standoff with no immediate prospect for de-escalation. The conflict has solidified in the maritime domain, with the US enforcing a strict blockade around Iran and the Houthis escalating attacks in the Red Sea, leading to unprecedented crew fatalities. Diplomatically, the fragile ceasefire framework between Washington and Tehran appears to be collapsing, with Iran disavowing extension talks and the US explicitly shifting to a "do-nothing" military strategy that relies on economic strangulation and naval interdiction. The revelation of Iranian intelligence tracking President Trump's exact location in Turkey, combined with the recent shootdown of a US F-15E, underscores Tehran's growing asymmetric capabilities and willingness to target high-value US assets.

Watch next for potential Iranian retaliation against US blockade enforcement, further shipping disruptions in the Red Sea and Hormuz, and the operational impact of depleted US Patriot interceptor stockpiles on regional air defense postures.

Senior Iranian source tells Reuters there are no discussions to extend a ceasefire with the U.S., saying that there is no ceasefire start date and therefore nothing to extend. The source accused Washington of violating the MoU 48 hours after it was reached and said talks now focus on the U.S. returning to the memorandum and defining a timeframe for its commitments. → tweet link

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) says U.S. forces disabled the Panama flagged M/V VELA NOVA today after the vessel allegedly attempted to violate the U.S. naval blockade of Iran by sailing toward an Iranian port.

CENTCOM says a U.S. Navy MH-60 helicopter fired two Hellfire missiles into the vessel's engine room, disabling its steering gear after the crew allegedly ignored repeated warnings. No injuries have been reported among the vessel's 17 crew members.

The circumstances surrounding the vessel's alleged destination are less clear from publicly available AIS data. https://t.co/Y4QTdcR0wF data showed the VELA NOVA's stated destination as Port Jebel Ali in the United Arab Emirates, rather than an Iranian port. At the time reporting of the incident emerged, its reported position also appeared to be west of the previously established U.S. blockade line at the entrance to the Gulf of Oman.

This does not necessarily contradict CENTCOM's account as AIS destination data is user entered and the U.S. military likely has intelligence not publicly available.

The strike brings CENTCOM's reported totals to 55 commercial vessels redirected, two boarded and three disabled since the current blockade was established. → tweet link

Intelligence & Assassination Threat

@FaytuksNetwork · 2026-08-12T09:29

U.S. intelligence detected a potential Iranian threat to President Trump during his final day in Turkey, two officials tell the New York Times. Intelligence indicated Iran knew the exact hotel and floor where Trump was staying, while a person carrying a shoulder-fired missile was reportedly spotted near the NATO summit. → tweet link

@sentdefender · 2026-08-12T12:30

New reporting sheds more light on why Trump was secretly removed from Air Force One in Ankara last month.

U.S. intelligence reportedly picked up multiple streams of information indicating a specific surface to air missile threat against the aircraft carrying Trump. Someone near the NATO summit was also reportedly observed with a shoulder-fired missile.

Even more concerning is that U.S. officials say Iranian intelligence knew where Trump was staying in Ankara, including the floor of the building.

The threat was considered credible enough to trigger an extraordinary deception. Trump publicly boarded the legacy VC-25A 'Air Force One', was secretly removed in a catering container, and departed Turkey aboard a C-32A. The VC-25A then flew on with senior officials, staff and reporters aboard, creating the appearance that Trump was still onboard.

There is no public evidence Iran actually attempted to attack the aircraft. But the combination of a potential missile threat and highly specific knowledge of Trump's location was apparently serious enough for the U.S. to treat the threat as real.

The biggest unanswered question may be how Iran obtained such detailed information about the president's movements and lodging. → tweet link

@sentdefender · 2026-08-12T11:43

According to the New York Times, the threat in Ankara was considered serious enough for the Secret Service to secretly move Trump off Air Force One in a catering container and onto another military aircraft. Air Force One then departed for Britain with senior officials, military personnel and journalists aboard, while those passengers were apparently unaware that the presidential aircraft itself was considered at risk.

The operation was intended to conceal Trump's movements and prevent an adversary from knowing which aircraft he was actually aboard. The unusual aspect is that the deception potentially shifted the risk from the president to other passengers without their knowledge.

The article also notes that this differs from previous presidential deception operations. During Bill Clinton's 1999/2000 Pakistan trip, for example, journalists were at least partially informed of the deception, and the details were publicly disclosed after the president was safe.

The White House has defended the decision, with Trump saying he followed Secret Service advice. Former officials interviewed by the NYT are divided: some argue that protecting the president necessarily takes precedence, while others contend that knowingly placing uninformed civilians in a potentially targeted aircraft crosses an important line. → tweet link

The @IEA August 2026 report is out and here are the highlights.

🛢World oil demand is down 1.6 million barrels per day (mb/d). Dont expect to see growth until 3Q26 🛢Global oil supply rose to 101.5 mb/d. That is still 6.3 mb/d off from last year. Hormuz has 8.3 mb/d shut in. 🛢Refinery crude throughput still 5 mb/d below last year. 🛢Global inventories decreased by 69 mb in July. Observed stocks are down 410 mb since the start of the war.

The story here is the damage that has been done to world stocks since the conflict has begun. The re-opening in June and July started to relieve the shortages, but the underlying issue remains. It has just moved down the calendar a bit more.
