Executive Summary

The Middle East saw a major escalation overnight as US forces conducted large-scale strikes against Iranian military and maritime targets, including the disabling of two Iranian state-owned oil tankers under a newly approved "tanker-for-tanker" policy. In retaliation, Iran launched ballistic missiles and drones against US and allied facilities in Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain, resulting in intercepted attacks but heightened regional alert. Additionally, intelligence emerged revealing that Russia has been secretly assisting Iran in developing advanced supersonic cruise missiles, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly vowed to bring down the Iranian regime.

Key Events

Analysis

The implementation of the US "tanker-for-tanker" policy marks a significant escalation in the maritime conflict, directly targeting Iran's economic lifelines in response to shipping attacks. While US officials claim the recent strikes have "bought at least a month" of reduced threat levels in the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's rapid retaliatory drone and missile attacks on Gulf states demonstrate its continued willingness and capability to project power regionally. The revelation of Russian supersonic missile tech transfers to Iran poses a severe long-term threat to US naval assets and commercial shipping in the Gulf. Meanwhile, Iranian cyber operations targeting US infrastructure suggest Tehran is opening asymmetric fronts. Watch for further maritime disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian cyber retaliations, and the operational deployment of newly acquired Russian missile technology.

Both strikes appear to be disabling hits against the steering compartment on the aft end of the ship.

Following UKMTO’s reports of a ‘security’ incident in the Strait of Hormuz, that has resulted in the deaths of 2 mariners, the IRGC has claimed that two oil tankers struck Iranian mines in the strait whilst sailing through transit routes other than the ones laid out by Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA). Fresh figures: Over the past (complete) 28 days, there have been six days where more than 10 million barrels of crude oil departed via the USN Blockade Line.

As you can see, the average daily number is 7.54 Mbpd (down from 17.67 Mbpd back in Jan & Feb 2026).

Of that amount, 5.04 Mbpd comes out via the SoH while another 2.49 Mbpd comes out of the oil terminals located along the GoO.

Crude oil exports via the Strait of Hormuz per our tracking:

  • Pre-conflict era (2026-01-01 to 2026-02-28): 16.63 Mbpd
  • Pre-US blockade conflict era (2026-02-28 to 2026-04-13): 3.45 Mbpd
  • First US blockade (2026-04-13 to 2026-06-18): 2.72 Mbpd
  • MoU effective era (2026-06-18 to 2026-07-14): 10 Mbpd
  • Second US blockade era (2026-07-14 - present): 4.9 Mbpd

186 days of conflict amounted to 779 million barrels of crude oil via the SoH; which works out to 4.19 Mbpd.

Iran-Russia Military Cooperation

@sentdefender · 2026-09-01T23:31

The Financial Times reports that Russia has been secretly helping Iran develop supersonic cruise missile technology since 2023, in what could become one of Moscow’s most significant military technology transfers to Tehran.

The program, known as C430L, involves Russia’s state arms exporter Rosoboronexport and NPO Mashinostroyenia, with Russian missile engineers traveling repeatedly to Iran and analyzing Iranian ramjet flight-test data. The technology could eventually enable Iran to field faster, low altitude anti ship and land attack cruise missiles that would be significantly harder for U.S. and allied defenses to intercept.

Iran has already built and flight tested the ramjet propulsion system, but the FT found no evidence that a Russian assisted supersonic cruise missile has been deployed. The leaked correspondence indicates the program remained active into June 2026, including discussions about a next phase, although it is unclear whether that phase has begun.

The development is particularly significant for U.S. naval forces in the Middle East: Iran has demonstrated an ability to threaten American bases with drones and ballistic missiles, but has so far been less successful against U.S. naval assets. A mature ramjet powered anti ship missile could give Tehran a substantially more capable weapon for targeting ships in the Gulf and surrounding waters.

We are seeing disturbing steps toward the horizontal escalation of the wars in Ukraine and Iran.

1- Russia is expanding its hybrid war against Europe 2- Europe/NATO are struggling to unite in response 3- North Korea is deploying more troops and now missile batteries to Europe 4- Russia is supplying missile technology and intelligence to Iran which it can use to target U.S. bases, Gulf allies and Israel 5- Iran is supplying advanced drones to Russia which (like ballistic missiles) are hard for Ukraine to take out 6- China remains on Russia’s side every step of the way 7- The US is largely absent with the danger that Russia and China read that as an invitation to further escalate → tweet link

This is great, however it doesn't change the fact that the service members who are currently serving in the war in the Middle East will not qualify for the same benefits as those who served during declared hostilities.

For example, some states match the SGLI insurance payment for those killed during a declared war. That benefit will not exist for this conflict. → tweet link
