Executive Summary

Major escalation in the Iran-Gulf conflict axis occurred over the past 24 hours, with Houthi forces seizing Perim Island in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, completing their control over this critical chokepoint. Simultaneously, Saudi Arabia's East-West oil pipeline was struck by drones originating from Iraq, causing significant damage and forcing a precautionary shutdown of infrastructure carrying approximately 7 million barrels per day. The attacks come as Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman made direct requests to President Trump for U.S. military strikes against the Houthis, which were declined—Washington instead opting to expand intelligence and targeting support to approximately 200 U.S. military personnel. In the Strait of Hormuz, two commercial vessels were struck by projectiles, and the IRGC claimed destruction of a U.S. Navy unmanned surface vessel. Diesel prices crossed $6/gallon nationally for the first time, driven by supply disruptions.

Key Events

Analysis

Escalation Trajectory: The past 24 hours represent a significant acceleration in the multi-front pressure campaign against Saudi Arabia and regional energy infrastructure. The Houthi seizure of Perim Island mirrors Iranian tactics in the Strait of Hormuz—establishing control over critical chokepoints to leverage global economic interests. The pipeline attack removes approximately 7 million barrels per day of capacity, which is particularly significant given that the pipeline was the workaround for the effectively closed Strait of Hormuz.

Strategic Logic: Iran appears to be testing Saudi resolve and U.S. commitment simultaneously. By striking the pipeline from Iraqi territory, Tehran maintains deniability while demonstrating reach. The Houthis' rapid gains along Yemen's Red Sea coast—Mokha, Perim Island, Dhubab—establish a contiguous zone of control that fundamentally alters the strategic geometry of Bab al-Mandeb.

U.S. Calculus: Washington's refusal to conduct direct strikes reflects an effort to avoid expanding the military footprint while still supporting allies. The administration faces pressure from rising fuel prices ahead of midterms, with diesel surpassing $6/gallon nationally. The Defense Production Act consideration for refining capacity suggests concern about sustained price pressure.

Diplomatic Channels: Trilateral Saudi-Pakistani-Iranian communications, including calls between Iran's foreign minister and Saudi/Pakistani counterparts, suggest back-channel efforts to manage escalation. However, the military gains on the ground may shift bargaining positions significantly.

What to Watch: Whether the pipeline damage proves operationally significant or temporary; whether the U.S. increases kinetic support if Houthi control of Bab al-Mandeb tightens further; whether Iran responds to Israeli operations in Lebanon; and whether diesel prices continue climbing toward politically sensitive thresholds.

CNN reports that Saudi Arabia's East-West oil pipeline system was struck by projectiles Thursday, with U.S. officials saying pumping stations alongside the pipeline were hit and fires broke out. Satellite imagery appears to show significant fire damage at one pumping station, although it remains unclear whether the pipeline itself was damaged or how long repairs would take. One U.S. official told CNN the attack was carried out by drones originating from Iraq, but responsibility has not been independently established. → tweet

CNN on Saudi Arabia's East-West Pipeline: "An early analysis found that pump stations, which are located next to the pipeline itself, were hit, one of the US officials said. A satellite image taken Friday appears to show extensive fire damage at one pumping station, and an image of a different pumping station, taken Thursday, showed a small fire sending up plumes of thick, black smoke." → tweet

For the first time in two months since the de-facto cessation of the Memorandum of (Mis?)Understanding, the aggregate exports of crude oil out of the US Blockade Line by Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE and Oman have been averaging north of 10 million barrels per day. Iranian crude oil exports continue to remain at zero. → tweet

Houthi Advances in Yemen

@sentdefender · 2026-09-11T12:17

The Houthis seized Mayun Island, also known as Perim Island, in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, according to various reports from the region. The small volcanic island is strategically important because it sits inside the strait and divides the waterway into two shipping channels. Control of Mayun gives the Houthis a significant position from which to monitor and potentially threaten commercial vessels transiting between the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. → tweet

"Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis reached the strategic island of Perim in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait on Friday, four Yemeni government sources told Reuters, moving ‌to tighten their grip on a vital global shipping route in the widening Middle East war. Earlier, two sources from the Saudi-backed, internationally recognised Yemeni government said its forces had pulled out of Perim and that the Houthis had also taken the mainland Red Sea coastal town of Dhubab, which faces the island." → tweet

In all seriousness. There is a lot of Hair on Fire about the Houthi seizure of the islands in the Bab el-Mandeb and the port of Mocha. HOWEVER, the Houthis always had the ability to hit ships in that region without these islands or port. They proved that from Nov 2023 to Sep 2025. More importantly, there is no indication that the Houthis are stopping or hitting any ships, except for their stated blockade against the Saudis. → tweet

U.S.-Saudi Cooperation

@sentdefender · 2026-09-11T12:34

Axios reports that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman called President Trump twice Thursday and urged the U.S. to launch strikes against the Houthis as the group advanced toward the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Trump declined, and U.S. officials said the administration currently has no plans for direct military action against the Houthis. The request marks a shift from July, when Riyadh told Washington it could handle the Houthi threat itself and Trump backed Saudi military action. → tweet

CNN reports that the U.S. has expanded intelligence and targeting support specifically for Saudi Arabia's military campaign against the Iranian backed Houthis in Yemen. Two vessels struck in Strait of Hormuz off Oman: Incidents add to grim weekly tally in the Middle East as Iran and US trade attacks on merchant ships. One of the ships was hit by two projectiles, causing a fire onboard, said Vanguard, before two projectiles struck the other vessel." → tweet

Energy Market Impact

@FaytuksNetwork · 2026-09-11T17:48

The U.S. is weighing invoking the Defense Production Act to expand oil refining capacity, as the Iran war drives fuel prices higher ahead of the midterms, according to Reuters. The act has never been used to add refining capacity. → tweet

If this is verified, and effective at disabling/destroying portions of the pipeline, it will be a major blow to Saudi oil exports as the pipeline carries 5 million barrels per day (BPD) for export. It handles another 2 million BPD direct to refineries to process and then export or use internally. → tweet
